In a letter today to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, NH Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Rep. Jeanne Shaheen say the mission of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, is vital to national security.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) _ New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte and U.S. Rep. Jeanne Shaheen say the civilian and military employees at two large installations in the state should be kept on the job during the government shutdown.

In a letter sent Tuesday to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Ayotte, a Republican, and Shaheen, a Democrat, say the missions of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the air refueling wing at Pease International Tradeport are vital to national security.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers were sent home Tuesday after Congress failed to agree on a spending bill to keep government running.

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan says she shares people's frustration over Congress's inability to avert the shutdown. She says the shutdown will cause unnecessary hardship to New Hampshire families.
