4 Maine Teachers up for National Educator Award

Maine Department of Education Chief Academic Officer Rachelle Tom on Friday announced the state's finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

GARDINER, Maine (AP) _ Four Maine teachers are finalists for a national award for excellence in science and mathematics teaching.

Maine Department of Education Chief Academic Officer Rachelle Tom on Friday announced the state's finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The finalists are seventh-and-eighth grade science teacher Robin Kennedy at Sebasticook Valley Middle School; chemistry and physics teacher Lisa McLellan at Windham High School; math teacher William O'Brien at Camden Hills Regional High School; and biology teacher Amy Troiano at Westbrook High School.

The department says the National Science Foundation will pick two winners from each state. The winners will be recognized at an event in Washington, D.C., next spring and receive a $10,000 award.
