Maine Guard Pushes for Upgrade of Armories
10/30/2013 10:43 AM ET

Officials supporting a bond issue to upgrade the state's armories say working conditions in many of them are deplorable and unsafe.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The Maine National Guard is urging voters to approve a $14 million bond issue to upgrade armories around the state.

Officials say working conditions in many of the armories are deplorable and unsafe.

Brig. Gen. James Campbell tells WMTW-TV that many of the facilities date to the 1930s and conditions have deteriorated substantially over the decades.

Soldiers and airmen have launched a public awareness campaign in the hopes of convincing Maine voters to support the bond question on next week's ballot.
