Maine Shipbuilder to Lay off 81 Workers This Month
11/08/2013 01:31 PM ET

Bath Iron Works officials notified union leaders Thursday about the new layoffs, which are effective Nov. 22.

BATH, Maine (AP) _ Navy shipbuilder Bath Iron Works is laying off 81 employees in its attempt to balance the number of employees with the shipyard's need for work.

Bath Iron Works officials notified union leaders Thursday about the new layoffs, which are effective Nov. 22.

The new round of layoffs follows 39 others recently announced that are effective Nov. 18.

Officials have said those layoffs are due in part to the cyclical nature of the shipyard's workload following last week's launch of the Zumwalt destroyer, the largest Navy destroyer ever built.

Bath Iron Works officials tell the Portland Press Herald that the shipbuilder currently has 5,450 workers, about 200 more than it did at the beginning of last year.

Jobs impacted by the new layoffs include insulators, shipfitters and metal preparation technicians.
