Obama Official: Maine Exchange Enrollment to Grow
11/18/2013 12:25 PM ET

Christine Hager briefed Maine lawmakers today on the status of the health care exchange, a key component of President Barack Obama's health care law.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The top U.S. Department of Health and Human Services official for New England says the number of Mainers enrolled in the health care exchange is expected to grow substantially over the next couple of months.

Christine Hager briefed Maine lawmakers Monday on the status of the health care exchange, a key component of President Barack Obama's health care law.

A federal report released last week shows that 271 Mainers picked plans on the exchange in the first month of open enrollment. More than 3,500 Maine residents submitted applications on behalf of nearly 6,500 people, like themselves, their spouses and children.

The administration has been criticized for the low enrollment numbers and technical problems with the exchange website.

But Hager says the number of filled out applications is encouraging.
