Pope Names Deeley to Head Portland, Maine Diocese

The Most Rev. Robert Deeley, 67, has been the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston since January.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Pope Francis has named the Most Rev. Robert Deeley (left) to be the next bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

The announcement was made Wednesday by the Vatican.

The 67-year-old Deeley has been Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston since January. Prior to that he served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia in Boston, a post he held since September 2011.

Deeley will be introduced by Bishop Richard Malone, the current apostolic administrator of the Portland diocese, at a news conference later on Wednesday.

In a statement released by the diocese, Deeley thanked Pope Francis for the honor and also thanked Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston for his guidance.

Deeley was born and raised in Massachusetts. He was ordained in 1973 at Sacred Heart Parish in Watertown.
