Solar Flares Get the Attention of Maine Utility Regulators
01/20/2014   Reported By: Jennifer Rooks

There's a lot of attention in the news to issues around climate change, and about its effects on weather and ecosystems the world over. But you may not have heard much about the phenomena known as coronal mass ejections - or solar flares - that some scientists say pose a serious risk to the world's power grids and communications systems. The issue is addressed in a report due out this week from the Maine Public Utilities Commission. That PUC report was the result of a bill in the Legislature sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Andrea Boland of Sanford. Jennifer Rooks spoke with Boland, and with freelance meteorologist Max Riseman, who describes solar flares as "explosions on the sun."
