Collins: I Would go to the Olympics
01/22/2014 12:41 PM ET

At an event in Yarmouth today, Sen. Susan Collins said she would go to the games if she could because choosing not to hands a victory to terrorists.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins says she is concerned about possible security threats the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

At an event in Yarmouth today to push for more spending on Alzheimer's research, Collins said she thinks the Russian government is becoming more open to help from other nations, including the United States.

"At first they were very resistant, but now I think they realize that they need as much intelligence, and as much help, in this counter-terrorism effort as possible," Collins said.

Last weekend, Sen. Angus King said he would not go - and wouldn't want his family to go - to the games because of the security threat.

Collins said whether or not to attend the games is a personal decision.  She says she would choose to go if she could because doing otherwise hands a victory to terrorists.

Collins says she needs to stay in Washington, though, to protect her perfect voting record in Congress.
