02/14/2014 10:04 AM ET

It was still snowing in some areas Friday morning, and in some places the snow was accompanied by sleet and freezing rain.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) _ Many schools across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont remain closed while the region begins to dig out from the storm that dumped over a foot of snow in some areas.

Northern New England was the last region of the country to be hit by the storm overnight Friday that churned its way up the East Coast leaving icy roads and more snow from Georgia to Massachusetts, areas unaccustomed to fierce winter storms.

It was still snowing in some areas Friday morning, along with sleet and freezing rain.

Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are used to big winter storms, but snow storms still slow travel, closed schools and some businesses.

Vermont delayed the opening of non-essential state offices. Maine state offices are opening two hours later than normal on Friday.
