PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A former Maine State Police chief is facing sex abuse charges.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department said 73-year-old Andrew Demers of New Gloucester was arrested Monday, accused of having sexual contact with a minor younger than 12 for several months.

Demers served as chief for six years starting in 1987. All told, he served for 26 years until his retirement in 1993.
