04/10/2014 03:40 PM ET

The first fires were reported on Oxford and Nicholas streets, and hours later, residents reported an explosion and fire on Howe Street, and another fire down the street.

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) _ The fire chief in Maine's second-largest city says arson was the cause of two of four overnight fires, including one that gutted adjacent apartment buildings and displayed about 20 people.

Lewiston firefighters spent the pre-dawn hours battling the fires.

No one was hurt.

The first fires were reported on Oxford and Nicholas streets. Hours later, residents reported an explosion and fire on Howe Street, where neighboring, three-story apartment units were heavily damaged. Later, there was a fourth fire down the street.

Lewiston Fire Chief Paul LeClair said the second fire on Howe Street and the fire on Oxford street were set. He said the investigation was continuing into the other fires.

The Red Cross is on the scene to assist displaced residents and a shelter has been set up.
