05/08/2014 10:37 AM ET

Twenty-four-year-old Leroy Smith III was scheduled to appear today in Kennebec County Superior Court.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A Maine man charged with killing his father is due to make his first court appearance since being charged with murder.

Twenty-four-year-old Leroy Smith III was scheduled to appear Thursday in Kennebec County Superior Court. He's charged in the death of his father, 56-year-old Leroy Smith II, whose remains were found Monday.

Investigators say it appears the elder was killed in an apartment in Gardiner and later moved to the wooded location in Richmond. An autopsy determined that he died ``from multiple sharp force injuries.''

The younger Smith was originally detained on a warrant from Massachusetts, where he was charged with violating a protection-from-harassment order. Police said he told them about the body.
