Maine Governor Faults Liberals for Gridlock
05/08/2014 11:24 AM ET

Gov. Paull LePage told an audience at the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce today that ``ideologues who are progressive and liberal'' have halted his attempts to attract businesses and expand charter schools.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Maine Gov. Paul LePage used a speaking engagement in front of Portland business leaders to blame Democrats for what he called pervasive gridlock in the state's government.

LePage spoke Thursday before the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce. He focused heavily on education, welfare fraud and business growth, all of which he said were issues hampered by partisanship in state politics. He faulted Democrats in the state House of Representatives for rejecting changes to the state's welfare system last month.

LePage told the crowd that ``ideologues who are progressive and liberal'' have halted his attempts to attract businesses and expand charter schools.

LePage, a Republican, was elected in 2010 and is campaigning for re-election against Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and independent Eliot Cutler.
