Officials Investigating Backyard Fire That Burned 2-Week-Old Sanford Boy
05/16/2014 11:22 AM ET

Police say Callum Jeising suffered second- and third-degree burns when his father's coat caught on fire while he was holding the child on Wednesday night.

SANFORD, Maine (AP) -- Fire marshals say they are still investigating a backyard pit fire that badly burned a 2-week-old Sanford, Maine, infant.

Police say Callum Jeising suffered second- and third-degree burns when his father's coat caught on fire while he was holding the child on Wednesday night.

Police originally spelled the name as Cullum Jelsing; on Friday, they said they were wrong.

Investigators say the father, 43-year-old Dirk Jeising, had been drinking, but it was unclear if that played a role in the accident. Police say fire marshals are investigating and will consult with the York County District Attorney's office when the investigation concludes.

A phone listing for Jeising was disconnected. A call to Shriner's Hospital, where the child was transferred, has not been returned.
