Maine Health Officials to Study Medicaid Expansion
11/19/2013 10:14 AM ET

The announcement comes a day after President Barack Obama's administration urged Republican Gov. Paul LePage to expand the program to cover about 70,000 more Mainers.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maine health officials will work with a group over the next year to improve the state's program and study whether to expand it under the federal health care overhaul.
Maine's Department of Health and Human Services announced on Tuesday that it's partnering with the Alexander Group, led by Gary Alexander, who ran the Medicaid program in Rhode Island.
The department says the group will seek to address the financial challenges facing Maine's Medicaid program.
Part of the work will focus on studying the short-and-long-term impact of expanding Medicaid on the state and on those currently in the program.
A spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Paul LePage says the governor remains concerned about the costs of the expansion and continues to seek greater flexibility in running the Medicaid program in Maine.
