UPDATE: Maine Chambers at Odds over Bond Issues
10/10/2012 02:52 PM ET

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce is supporting all four bonds on the November ballot, while the Mid Maine Chamber is opposing two.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ While the U.S. Senate race and other high-profile contests dominate Maine's campaign scene, advocates for the four bond issues on the Nov. 6 ballot are quietly working to get the support of voters.

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce, which represents 5,000 businesses, is supporting all four bonds. President Dana Connors says they're all good for the economy.

The Mid Maine Chamber of Commerce is opposing two of the borrowing proposals - $11.3 million for capital improvements for state higher education systems, and a $7.2 million bond for water and sewer upgrades. But the Waterville-based chamber group is supporting the $51 million bond issue for highways, bridges and other transportation projects.

The fourth bond, $5 million for land conservation, has the support of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine.
