No Progress Seen in Settling Hospital-MaineCare Issue
05/24/2013 3:30 PM ET

After a day of bitter confrontation and dueling press releases bearing charges of non-cooperation, no progress is seen in Augusta as Republicans backing Gov. Paul LePage and majority Democrats hope for ways to repay a looming debt to hospitals and expand Medicaid services.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _Rhetoric was muted Friday as the Senate and House took the day off from sessions. But the two parties' House leaders' comments on a television program indicated that the sides are no closer to agreement.

At issue is a bill to repay Maine hospitals' $484 million debt, with the state's $186 million share to be covered by future liquor sales. LePage and the Democrats agree on that. But LePage is so opposed to a Democratic plan to pair it with expansion of Medicaid, he's vetoing the bill.
