State officials say convicted murderer Alan Powell, 57, died last night after he was attacked by Guy Hunnewell, 42, who is also serving time on a murder conviction.

The death of an inmate at the Maine State Prison is being investigated as a homicide. Alan Powell, 57, died last night after being attacked by another inmate in an exercise area of the facility.

Detectives say Powell was attacked by Guy Hunnewell, 42, who is serving a 40-year sentence for stabbing his girlfriend to death in Fairfield in 1997.

Powell was serving a life sentence for stabbing and strangling a Waterville woman in 1989. State officials say the state Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy on Powell's body.

Hunnewell remains at the prison, located in Warren. Officials say the Knox County grand jury will consider the case in July.
