King, EPA Official Discuss Global Warming
06/06/2014 12:22 PM ET

Sen. Angus King spoke at a gathering in Portland today that included Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Sen. Angus King says it's ``undeniable'' that climate change is real and is caused by humans, and poses a threat to the nation's economic livelihood.

King spoke at a gathering in Portland that included Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe on Friday, just days after the EPA proposed new rules for reducing carbon dioxide emitted by the nation's power plants.

The EPA has proposed that Maine and the region can continue to use the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to reduce emissions. The state also will benefit from cleaner air from reduced emissions elsewhere under the new proposal.

University of Southern Maine economist Charlie Colgan said the EPA rules reducing carbon emissions will help the region's economy by reducing New England's economic disadvantage when it comes to electricity costs.
