First Ever Marine Census Reveals Surprises in the Gulf of Maine
08/03/2010   Reported By: Josie Huang

How many different life forms are there in the ocean? Scientists around the world have actually completed the first-ever Census of Marine Life, conducted over 10 years and released this week. The Gulf of Maine was part of that survey. Oceanographer Lewis Incze of the University of Southern Maine led that tally with a team of researchers from 24 organizations around New England. Ten years ago, he says, researchers guessed that there were fewer than 2,000 named species in the Gulf of Maine, but Incze says the census revealed that there are many more.
