11/29/2012 11:36 AM ET

Bush's Chief of Staff Jean Becker tells the Houston Chronicle that the former president has bronchitis, and his condition is not considered life threatening.

Former President George H.W. Bush is in a Houston hospital being treated for a lingering cough, officials told the Houston Chronicle. Bush, 88, has been hospitalized at Methodist Hospital for seven days, the paper reports.

Bush's Chief of Staff Jean Becker told the publication that the former president has bronchitis, and his condition is not considered life threatening.

Becker said there had been concern that the illness would turn into pneumonia, but it has not. Bush was visited Sunday by his son, former President George W. Bush, and his wife Laura.

The elder Bush, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, is expected to be released this weekend.
