PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The late Dave Brubeck was born in California and was a fixture at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island. But the jazz great was no stranger to Maine, either.

In fact, Brubeck used to be a regular summer guest at the Black Point Inn in Scarborough, which is depicted on the cover of his Grammy-winning CD, "Just You, Just Me."

Portland Magazine interviewed Brubeck in 2000 when he kicked off the Maine Jazz Festival with performances at Portland's Merrill Auditorium. He told the magazine he used to visit Eric Kunzel, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony, at his home on Swan's Island. He also enjoyed Monhegan Island.

The jazz pianist formed The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951. He died Wednesday in Connecticut, a day before his 92nd birthday.
