PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has upheld the murder conviction of a 21-year-old man who's serving a 35-year sentence for fatally shooting a rival on a Bangor street.

In Tuesday's unanimous decision, justices rejected arguments put forth by Zachary Carr, who was convicted in the January 2010 death of 19-year-old John "Bobby'' Surles. According to the opinion, Carr shot Surles in the chest while he was lying unarmed on the ground following a confrontation between two groups of young people.

In his appeal, Carr contended that the trial court judge should have granted him a new trial because prosecutors failed to disclose a recorded interview with a key witness. He also challenged whether there was sufficient evidence to convict him and how various factors were determined in calculating his sentence.
