Maine Weighs Options to Address Gun Violence, School Safety
12/18/2012 03:56 PM ET

Maine House Speaker Mark Eves says the goal is to have a comprehensive review of the issue and not rush out recommendations.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Days after the Connecticut school shootings, Maine's House speaker says legislative leaders from both parties will be weighing options to examine school safety, mental illness, and gun violence.

Democratic Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick says lawmakers are in the very early stages of considering their options. But he says lawmakers must hear from mental health specialists, school officials, police and public safety officials and hunting interests.

The speaker says the goal is to have a comprehensive review of the issue and not rush out recommendations. Eves says people first need time to process Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children, seven adults and himself.
