Maine Man Charged with 2 Counts of Murder
12/31/2012 7:34 AM ET

Maine State Police say James Pak was taken into custody at about 10 p.m. Saturday following a standoff at his suburban neighborhood home.

BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) _ A 74-year-old Maine man has been charged with two counts of murder following the shooting deaths of two tenants inside an apartment he rented out at his Biddeford home.

Maine State Police say James Pak was arrested at about 10 p.m. Saturday following a standoff at his suburban neighborhood home. He is charged with killing 19-year-old Derrick Thompson and Thompson's girlfriend, 18-year-old Alivia Welch.

Thompson's mother, 44-year-old Susan Johnson, was being treated for a gunshot wound at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Johnson's 6-year-old son was not hurt.

Police say Johnson and her young son were rescued by Biddeford police after she reported the shootings about 7 p.m.

Detectives are investigating whether the violence is connected to a landlord-tenant dispute. Johnson and her family moved into the apartment in October.
