Reed, Educators, Among Notable Maine Deaths
12/31/2012 7:45 AM ET

The list of Maine notables who died in 2012 also includes Portland-born actress Phyllis Thaxter, 92, best known for her role in the 1978 film "Superman.''

Former Gov. John Reed, a potato-farming boy who became governor and went on to serve an ambassadorship, is perhaps the best-known Mainer who died during 2012.

The list includes other politicians, educators, business leaders and others who achieved fame in unique ways. Frank Knight of Yarmouth, longtime protector of New England's tallest elm tree, died at age 103.

The state also lost James Franklin Goodrich, 99, a former president of Bath Iron Works who went on to help then-President Ronald Reagan build a 600-ship Navy.

Peter Kyros, the one-time shipyard worker who went to the Naval Academy and Harvard Law School before representing Maine in Congress, died at age 86.

The list also includes Portland-born actress Phyllis Thaxter, 92, best known for her role in the 1978 film "Superman.''
