Governor Proposing $100M Maine Prison Bond
01/15/2013 11;10 AM ET

Maine's medium-security prison in Windham, which has been added on to in stages through the decades, would be replaced if a $100 million bond proposed by Gov. Paul LePage is approved.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Corrections Department spokeswoman Jody Breton tells the Kennebec Journal in Augusta that preliminary plans call for eight of the Maine Correctional Center's 11 buildings, all built at least two decades ago, to be demolished.

Breton says the administration is looking at a facility to house more inmates than the current facility holds, but that won't be known until design plans are finalized. The correctional center now has 622 inmates, 530 of whom are men. Most inmates at the minimum- and medium-security prison have been sentenced to five years or less.

LePage is expected to release more details Tuesday.
