Del. Officials: Many Toll Cheats Have Maine Tags
01/17/2013 9:57 AM ET

State records show the drivers who owe Delaware the most in unpaid tolls and penalties have Maine license plates.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) _  But state officials say they're not really from Maine.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that thousands of Delawareans are illegally registering boat, horse, farm and other trailers in Maine.

Unlike most states, Maine allows nonresidents to register trailers for up to 12 years at a time, and the registration fee is just $12.

State officials say the trailers enable people to cheat at toll booths because they shield the license plates of the towing vehicles.

Last fiscal year, the state was owed $1.26 million in delinquent tolls on Interstate 95 and Delaware Route 1. Officials say a quarter of those violations have been attributed to Maine tags.
