Scarborough Officials to Vote on Oyster Nursery
02/04/2013 09:55 AM ET

The Scarborough Town Council is scheduled to meet this week to vote on an oyster nursery off the Pine Point Beach pier.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) _ The Scarborough Town Council is scheduled to meet this week to vote on an oyster nursery off the Pine Point Beach pier.

Abigail Carroll started buying oysters as juveniles to test her untrained hand at raising them at a farm in the Scarborough River.

Last year, she had an above-ground nursery in Biddeford Pool, but it was costly to pump water into the nursery and to transport the oysters to Scarborough.

Having a floating nursery at the pier will improve the flow of water and foster oyster growth.

Town Manager Tom Hall tells The Portland Press Herald aquaculture wasn't on Scarborough's radar screen when planning for the pier, but considering its negligible impact, he sees no reason not to encourage the use.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
