PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Meteorologist Mike Kistner said the reading as of 1:30 p.m. Saturday was 31.9 inches of snow in Portland. That shattered the old storm record of 27.1 inches from 1979.
Snow was still falling Saturday afternoon but it was beginning to taper off.
Wind remained a big concern, causing whiteout conditions and making driving treacherous. The wind gusted to 53 mph at the Portland airport and 68 mph at Matinicus Rock, 20 miles offshore.
State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said numerous vehicles, including several state police cruisers, were getting stuck in the deep snow.
