Maine Tells Railroad to Report Oil Shipments
07/25/2013 12:51 PM ET

Officials with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection says it's sent a notice of violation to Pan Am Railways asking it to report the oil transports, or explain why it isn't doing so.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The Department of Environmental Protection is telling a Massachusetts-based railroad to report it oil transports across Maine and pay the associated fees.

DEP spokesman Jessamine Logan says the department sent a notice of violation to Pan Am Railways asking it to report the oil transports and pay the fees as required by law for April and May, or explain why it isn't doing so. The company has until Aug. 6 to respond.

A Pan Am spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call for comment.

Pan Am Railways stopped filing its oil transport reports to the DEP beginning with its April report.

From January through March, the railroad carried 47.9 million gallons across Maine and paid more than $34,000 in fees that go to the state's oil spill cleanup fund.
