Maine Legislative Panel to Subpoena CDC Officials
02/21/2014 02:52 PM ET

The Government and Oversight Committee voted unanimously today to subpoena notes and testimony of five officials who declined invitations to testify in front of the committee.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A Maine legislative panel will issue subpoenas to state Centers for Disease Control officials as they seek answers about the mishandling and shredding of public documents.

The Government and Oversight Committee voted unanimously Friday to subpoena notes and testimony of five officials who declined invitations to testify in front of the committee.

The panel launched the investigation after Sharon Leahy-Lind, a former Maine CDC employee, said she was ordered to shred documents on the scoring and selection process for health program funds that were sought in an open-records request. She's sued the state and a top official at CDC.

Democratic Sen. Emily Cain of Orono says in a statement that lawmakers have a ``responsibility and an obligation to find out the truth.''
