John Durkin, a Bates junior attending an exchange program in Rome, went missing in the Italian city two days ago.

A student from New Hampshire attending Maine's Bates College is missing in Rome, Italy. John Durkin, of Rye, N.H. is on a study abroad program through Trinity College, in Hartford, Conn., officials at the Lewiston school say.

Officials say staff from Trinity, which has a campus in Rome, are also working with the Italian authorities to find Durkin, who has not been seen for two days, friends traveling with the group told WMTW-TV. They say he went out to a bar and never returned.

Bates' Associate Vice President of Communications Meg Kimmel told the station that Durkin's parents have been notified, and Durkin's father is on his way to Italy to assist with the search.

"We are very concerned about John and will share further news as it becomes available," school officials say in a statement.

Durkin is an economics major at Bates, and a member of the football team. He's a junior, and is scheduled to graduate next year.
