01/13/2014 04:58 PM ET

The state medical examiner's office concludes that 49-year-old Jeffrey Andrew Noonan of Saco died after removing a shunt that had been used for his kidney dialysis.

ALFRED, Maine (AP) _ Officials say a man who died in the York County Jail committed suicide.

The state medical examiner's office concluded Monday that 49-year-old Jeffrey Andrew Noonan of Saco died after removing a shunt that had been used for his kidney dialysis.

State police say Noonan was on a suicide watch because he'd made threats to jail officials.

Noonan had been arrested last Thursday on a warrant for failure to appear for a charge of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs. Officials say Noonan was checked at 6:12 a.m. Sunday and was found dead in a bloody cell 18 minutes later.
