01/14/2014 10:01 AM ET

Gary Alexander, who leads the Alexander Group, is expected to testify at the Health and Human Services Committee today.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maine lawmakers will hear from a consultant hired by Republican Gov. Paul LePage's administration to study whether the state should expand Medicaid under the federal health care law.

Gary Alexander, who leads the Alexander Group, is expected to testify at the Health and Human Services Committee on Tuesday.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services released part of the Alexander Group report on Friday. The report says that the expansion under the Affordable Care Act would cost the state $807 million over the first decade, even with the federal government footing the bill for the first three years.

Democrats, who are renewing their push to approve the expansion this session, say the report is politically driven and point to studies the show the state saving millions from the expansion.
