02/09/2013 8:50 AM ET

Officials are cautioning residents to stay off the roads in Maine, where up 30 inches of snow has fallen and visibility is near zero.

GRAY, Maine (AP) _ State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said numerous vehicles, including several state police cars, are getting stuck in the deep snow. He said stranded drivers should expect long waits for tow trucks or other assistance.

National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Legro said conditions are worsened by wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph. He said snow is falling at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour and expected to continue until about noon.

Maine Emergency Management Agency Director Rob McAleer said the E-ZPass lanes at the Maine Turnpike are closed, and toll booth workers in the cash lanes are warning drivers about the treacherous driving conditions.
