Maine Paper Rescinds Request for Gun Permit Data
02/15/2013 10:56 AM ET

The Bangor Daily News said on its website Friday it's told agencies who received its Freedom of Access request to disregard it.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A Maine newspaper says it's withdrawing its request to police agencies across the state for their lists of concealed-weapons permit holders, a day after the governor and key lawmakers lambasted the publication for its actions.

The Bangor Daily News said on its website Friday it's told agencies who received its Freedom of Access request to disregard it. The News says it told agencies that have responded that their records will be destroyed.

Republican legislative leaders expressed outrage after the Bangor paper's request became public, saying that publishing the permit holders' names could endanger them. Gov. Paul LePage, who identified himself as a permit holder, said the newspaper's request would incite fear among gun owners and non-gun owners about safety.

The Bangor paper said it never intended to publish the names.
