2 Companies Bid for International Ferry Route
02/15/2013 11:45 AM ET

Quest Navigation Inc. of Eliot is one of two U.S. companies that submitted bids to the provincial government in Nova Scotia, which would subsidize the ferry route.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ One of the two companies that want to operate a ferry between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, would utilize a modern cruise ferry built to cross the English Channel.

Quest Navigation Inc. of Eliot is one of two U.S. companies that submitted bids to the provincial government in Nova Scotia, which would subsidize the ferry route. Quest says it could start service with the 162-cabin Nova Star this summer if its bid is approved.

The Portland Press Herald says the provincial government is expected to decide this month whether to partner with one of the companies or request additional bids.

Neither Quest nor Baltimore-based Maritime Applied Physics Corp. has experience with cruise ships or ferries. But both say they're working with other companies that have necessary experience.
