Maine Gov. Submits Bill to Block Release of Concealed Weapons Data
02/15/2013 3:24 PM ET

The governor's bill comes in the wake of the Bangor Daily News' request - later withdrawn - for concealed weapons data from police agencies across the state.

Gov. Paul LePage has submitted emergency legislation to temporarily block the release of the names of concealed weapons permit holders in Maine.

The governor's bill comes in the wake of the Bangor Daily News' request for concealed weapons data from police agencies across the state.  The newspaper later said it had withdrawn its request.

Meanwhile, legislative Republicans say another group called "Celebration Connect'' submitted unsigned Freedom of Access requests for the data to an unknown number of police departments.

A Florida resident and former Mainer who owns the domain name Celebration Connect, Dan Heskett, says he did not file the concealed weapons request and doesn't know who is using his domain name for the request, The Associated Press reports.

LePage says the bill is expected to be introduced as early as next Tuesday.   He says if it's enacted, it would give lawmakers time to consider another measure which would make the information "permanently private."
