Maine Prison Guard Charged with Assaulting Inmate
02/21/2013 10:15 AM ET

Authorities say Capt. David Cutler, 54, of Appleton, tackled and assaulted a handcuffed inmate on Dec. 24.

ROCKLAND, Maine (AP) _ A guard at the Maine State Prison in Warren has been arrested and charged with assaulting an inmate.

Capt. David Cutler of Appleton was charged Wednesday with Class D assault, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison.

Authorities say the 54-year-old Cutler tackled and assaulted a handcuffed inmate on Dec. 24. The inmate, 36-year-old Renardo Williams, is serving a 15-year sentence for drug trafficking.

The inmate, who is black, has met with the NAACP of Portland about the incident. Chapter President Rachel Talbot Ross tells The Portland Press Herald that Williams did nothing to provoke the alleged assault other than question why black inmates were treated differently in the prison.

It was not clear who was representing Cutler.
