Maine Wardens Warn of Unstable Ice
03/08/2013 11:53 AM ET

Officials say ice on Maine's waterways is already melting and warmer temperatures are forecast for this weekend.

Be careful venturing onto Maine's ice-covered waterways because the ice is "quickly becoming unstable." That's the message today from the Maine Warden Service and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The warning comes after a man in a pickup truck fell through the ice while trying to retrieve an ice fishing shack from Hermon Pond in central Maine. The man was able to get out of the truck safely, wardens say.

Officials say ice is already melting and warmer temperatures are forecast for this weekend. The Warden Service is advising people to test the thickness of ice using an ice chisel or ice auger, to check with local bait shops for known thin ice areas, and to avoid driving on ice.
