Collins Introduces Bill Aimed at Preventing More Airline Furloughs
04/25/2013 03:20 PM ET

Collins says the bill would allow money to be shifted from the airport improvement program to operations accounts, as a way to prevent more furloughs of essential personnel.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado are introducing a bill intended to halt further furloughs of air trafffic controllers.

The furloughs are being blamed for flight delays, which are causing massive headaches for the traveling public.

Collins told her colleagues this morning that the measure would give the U.S. secretary of transportation the flexibility to transfer certain funds into the FAA's operations budget to prevent further furloughs of essential personnel.

"Our bill would accomplish this goal by allowing a one-time shift of unused monies in the airport improvement program to the operations accounts," Collins said.

Collins says the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration should be implemented in a way that ensures safety, and minimizes the impact on the traveling public and airline and hospitality jobs.
