NH Officers Seek Suspect in Eel Smuggling

Police tried to arrest the suspect authorities believe is involved in an international eel-smuggling operation earlier Friday, but he escaped wearing a set of handcuffs on one hand.

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) _ New Hampshire Fish and Game officers and the state police are searching for a suspect in the Hampton area they believe is involved in an international eel-smuggling operation, driven by a worldwide shortage of eels.

Police tried to arrest the suspect earlier Friday, but he escaped wearing a set of handcuffs on one hand.

A state police helicopter and several police dogs are searching the area of U.S. Route 1 in Hampton.

WMUR-TV reports a Fish and Game officer got a tip that two men suspected in illegally fishing eels off the New Hampshire coast would be in Hampton around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

One suspect was arrested. The second suspect fled.

The search is ongoing.

Immature eels, known as elvers, can fetch $2,000 a pound.
