UPDATE: NH Officers Arrest 2nd Suspected Eel Smuggler
05/03/2013 11:07 AM ET

A state police helicopter and several police dogs tracked the suspect to a hotel in Hampton Falls, NH, Fish and Game officials confirmed.

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) _ New Hampshire Fish and Game officers and the state police have arrested a second suspect they say is involved in an international eel-smuggling operation, driven by a worldwide shortage of eels.

Police arrested one suspect earlier Friday, but a second suspect fled wearing a set of handcuffs on one hand.

A state police helicopter and several police dogs searched the area of U.S. Route 1 in Hampton before tracking the suspect to a hotel in Hampton Falls, Fish and Game officials confirmed.

The investigation began after a Fish and Game officer got a tip that two men suspected in illegally fishing eels off the New Hampshire coast would be in Hampton around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Immature eels, known as elvers, can fetch $2,000 a pound overseas.
