07/08/2013 10:04 AM ET

The man was identified as 40-year-old Michael Grindle of Blue Hill, Maine, who had been living in Gloucester while on the crew.

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) _ Massachusetts authorities are investigating the death of a fisherman from Maine aboard a commercial vessel.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard tells The Gloucester Daily Times that crew aboard the 107-foot herring trawler Osprey reported a colleague suffering what appeared to be a "severe asthma attack'' at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

The boat was about 65 miles from Cape Cod and the Coast Guard ordered the vessel to Gloucester. It arrived at about 4:30 p.m.

The Essex district attorney's office says the death does not appear suspicious but an autopsy is scheduled. Police say they are investigating the discovery of a "class A substance'' on board.

The man was identified as 40-year-old Michael Grindle of Blue Hill, Maine, who had been living in Gloucester while on the crew.
