Maine's Beach-to-Beacon Race Set to Get Underway

The 16th annual Beach-to-Beacon will be run Saturday in Cape Elizabeth - the first time the race has been run since the Boston Marathon Bombings.

One of Maine's premier road races will be run tomorrow. It's the 16th annual TD Bank Beach-to-Beacon 10-K, but the first time the race has been run since the Boston Marathon bombings.

For Beach-to-Beacon race director Dave McGillivray - who's also the race director for the Boston Marathon - it was in unavoidable topic.

In Cape Elizabeth this morning, McGillivray told reporters that the Boston tragedy has actually strengthened the sport of running.

"There is really in increased interest in our sport, there really is," he said. "It did just the opposite of what the folks who caused this probably meant to accomplish - it did just the opposite."

The race, as it has throughout its history, drawn some of the world's elite runners, who will join thousands of others Saturday running through the streets of Cape Elizabeth toward the finish line, in sight of Portland Head Light.
