PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Five museum projects in Maine are being awarded more than $710,000 in federal grants.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services says the grants are among 244 awards given out nationwide this year to museums of all types. The institute says the nearly $30 million in grants will engage communities, create new learning experiences and care for and make accessible rich museum collections.

Funding in Maine is being awarded to the Maine Historical Society in Portland, the L.C. Bates Museum in Fairfield, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay and the Pleasant Point Indian Reservation.
