Portland-Area Water Rates to Rise 3 Percent

That translates to an extra $1 a month for a typical family but as much as $75 for large industrial users.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Portland-area water rates are going up and officials are beginning an advertising campaign to explain why the increase is necessary to preserve clean drinking water.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the Portland Water District plans to double its investment in replacing aging underground pipes from $3.5 million to $7 million over the next three years.

It's anticipated that water rates will rise 3 percent in 2014. That translates to an extra $1 a month for a typical family but as much as $75 for large industrial users.

A spokeswoman for the district says it plans to spend $35,000 in the coming year one the ``Value of Water'' public awareness campaign. It's aimed at explaining why infrastructure improvements to continue providing clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands of homes in the region.
