Federal regulators are considering whether to list the Atlantic wolffish as a threatened or endangered species. If the petiton is approved, it would be the first such listing of a New England ocean fish species. Populations of the long-tailed, toothy fish have declined dramatically in recent years. The Conservation Law Foundation, which requested the review, says landings of the fish have declined 95 percent since 1983. CLF's Vice President Peter Shelley says the fish is in danger of extinction because of overfishing and destruction of its underwater habitat by modern fishing methods. Fishermen seldom target wolffish: Most of them are swept up inadvertantly by gill nets and other fishing gear. But Shelly says the wolffish's dramatic population decline threatens the overall marine ecosystem. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has agreed that a review of the species' status is warranted. The review is expected to take nine months.
