Transportation Budget Boost Falls Short of Need, Senator Says
03/19/2010 10:45 AM ET

The Legislature's Transportation Committee has unanimously approved a supplemental transportation budget that's getting a multi-million dollar boost, but one committee leader says that's not nearly enough.

The Legislature's Transportation Committee has signed off on a revised transportation budget that contains an extra $9.6 million.  But Sen. Dennis Damon, a Trenton Democrat who co-chairs the committee, says that falls far short of what's really needed.

"Our need for our transportation system, our monetary need, is no longer in the millions of dollars, it's in the billions of dollars -- that's with a "b," he says.  "And the latest estimate is that it is about $3 billion."

Damon's committee declined to raise fees or change the gas tax.   The extra $9.6 million is from a re-projection of what the state can expect in revenues from its existing gas tax and fees.
